MISS WORLD HISTORY
The pageant was founded by Mr. Eric Morley in Great Britain in 1951. At first, it was intended to be the Festival Bikini Contest, which was called Miss World only by the press. Twenty-six delegates competed for the crown, five of them being foreigners. At the end, Kiki Haakonson of Sweden walked away with the crown. After Miss Universe was started in the USA in 1952, Eric Morley decided to make the pageant an annual event.
In 1959, BBC started broadcasting the competition. Soon, its rising popularity crossed the La Manche Channel to attract almost two billion viewers from all over the world. However, the popularity of the pageant started to fall in its home-country by the end of the century.
In the 80´s more stress was laid on intelligence and brain and the motto of "Beauty With a Purpose" was born and the "Continental queens of beauty " were introduced.
After Eric Morley´s death in 2000, the pageant was over-taken by his wife, Julia. She has tried to modernize the event by introducing a completely unique selection system - the fast-track events. The winner of each automatically advances into the semifinals. In 2004 the winner was chosen by the global public votes for the very first and so far last time.

The Miss World Organisation focuses on charity, especially on children. The winner lives in London with the Morley family and spends her year travelling and doing charity work.

The final event was always held in London till the end of the 80´s. Since then, it was hosted by eight other countries - Hong Kong(1989), USA(1991), South Africa(1992-1995, 2001), India(1996), the Seychelles(1997-1998), Nigeria(2002 - moved to London after riots), China(2003-2005, 2007) and Poland(2006). In 2008, the pageant was to be held in Kiev, Ukraine but was moved from there at the last minute to Johannesburg in South Africa. The 2009 pageant took take place in South Africa, as well.

Thirty-five countries managed to grab the Miss World crown - 5 times Venezuela and India, 4 times Great Britain(1974 winner dethroned), 3 times Iceland, Jamaica and Sweden, 2 times Argentina, Australia, Austria, Netherlands, Peru, South Africa(replaced original winner in 1974) and United States and Russia, one crown have Bermuda, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Grenada, Guam, Ireland, Israel, Nigeria, Poland, Puerto Rico, Trinidad&Tobago and Turkey.
