Latin America has a new queen

29. ledna 2009 v 19:19 | Martina A. |  Other international pageants
Yesterday, Vivian Noronha of Brazil was crowned as Reina Hispanoamericana 2008. It happened at a press conference in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She was accompanied by Gloria and Tatiana Limpias from Promociones Gloria(organisers of RH). After the conference, the new queen signed a contract with Opal to participate at Fexpo 2009, and received an Aerosur travel card which will allow her to travel for free to all Aerosur's destinations for a year.

Vivian placed second at the Miss World Brazil pageant and the same placement she reached also at Reina Hispanoamericana last autumn. But as the original winner Laura Zuniga of Mexico was dethroned, Vivian took over the title and responsibilities. She will try to win another crown at Miss Tourism Queen International in April in China.

BREAKING NEWS: Miss Czech Republic 2009 press conference

28. ledna 2009 v 19:54 | Martina A. |  National pageants

Today, the Miss CR press conference took place, after the pageant was taken over by the Central Group company and former Miss World Taťána Kuchařová last autumn.

According to the press report, the 21st addition of our oldest pageant shall begin in March and conclude on October 24th. Both events are supposed to be broadcasted by the Česká televize channel, which last happened about 15 years ago. Another change relates to the main purpose - the pageant will be mainly focused on charity. Every year, one charity projec
t will be supported. In 2009, it is two: "Children health foundation" and "Help the children !" projec
t.

Czech delegates to Miss World 2010 and Miss International 2010(our representatives to both 2009´s competitions to be announced in April) will be chosen among 12 finalists. The traditional People´s Choice Award stays but it is unknown whether the winner will represent our country internationally. The reigning Miss Czech Republic is Zuzana Jandová, who has been elected last April.

USA at Miss World during the 80´s

26. ledna 2009 v 21:33 | Martina A. |  What did not fit any category but is worth reading !
Miss World is not particulary known in the US, yet, their record in that pageant is nearly as outstanding as their performance at Miss Universe. During the 80´s and early 90´s, it was the main national contest, Miss USA, that used to send its 1st Runner Ups to compete in what is nowadays the largest beauty event on Earth.

Lisa Lynn Moss, Miss Louisiana and 2nd Runner Up to Miss USA 1981, Kimberly Seelbrede of Ohio, went to that year´s Miss World where she placed 7th. The winner was Pilin Leon of Venezuela.

Elizabeth Luann Caughey was Miss Texas and 1st RU to Miss USA 1982, Terri Lea Utley of Arkansas. At Miss World in London Elisabeth finished 5th. The winner that night was Mariasela Alvarez Lebrón from the Dominican Republic.

Another Miss Texas, Lisa Gayle Allred, was 1st RU to Miss USA 1983, Julie Lynne Hayek of California. At Miss World held in London Lisa placed 7th behind that year´s winner and the home-girl, Sarah-Jane Hutt.

West Virginia´s Kelly Lea Anderson placed as 1st Runner Up behind Miss USA 1984, Mai Therese Shanley of New Mexico. In London, where Miss World was held, Kelly reached finals and the 5th position. The winner was Venezuela´s Astrid Carolina Herrera Irrazábal.

New Mexico almost did it again a year later with Brenda Denton, who finished second at Miss USA 1985 won by Laura Elena Martínez-Herring of Texas. Brenda´s success continued when she placed as 2nd Runner Up behind that year´s Miss World Holmfridur Karlsdóttir from Iceland.

The carrier of future Hollywood super-star, Ohio´s very own Halle Berry, started in 1986, when she placed second to Miss USA, Christiane Fichtner of Texas. Halle went to Miss World in London and eventually reached the 6th position behind lovely Giselle Laronde of Trinidad&Tobago.

Miss Florida, Clotilde Helen Cabrera, was 1st RU to Miss USA 1987 Michelle Renee Royer of texas. Clotilde also represented the USA at Miss World held in London and won by Austria´s Ulla Weigerstorfer.

California´s Diana Magaña, 1st Runner Up to Miss USA 1988, Courtney Ann Gibbs from Texas, returned her country back on the Miss World map by advancing into the semifinals. The winner was Linda Pétursdóttir of Iceland.

Jill Renee Scheffert, Miss Oklahoma, was 1st RU to Miss USA 1989 Gretchen Lynn Polhemus of Texas and also 4th Runner Up to Miss World 1989, Aneta-Beata Kreglicka.

Representing South Carolina, Gina Marie Tolleson, placed second behind Miss USA 1990, Carole Anne Marie Gist from Michigan. A bigger success was waiting for her, however because on November 8th Gina became the second American woman in history to win the blue Miss World crown.

The last time the MUO officially sent a delegate to Miss World was New Jersey´s very own Charlotte Ray, 1st Runner Up to Miss USA 1991, Kelli Rachelle McCarty of Kansas. Charlotte didn´t disappoint and was called among the ten semifinalists.

Brazilian beauty queen bravely fights for life

21. ledna 2009 v 19:56 | Martina A. |  What did not fit any category but is worth reading !
Her story seems that one of a cindarella. With little money and only a small wardrobe, Mariana Bridi Costa first competed at Miss World Brazil in 2006. She kept on advancing and eventually finished as 3rd Runner Up.
Months later, she was sent to Ghana, where she competed for the new Face of the Universe title. She placed 4th again, as the best candidate from the American continent. Her fame reached the stars and soon an invitation from the state director of Sergipe arrived. She took part in Miss World Brazil again, this time with full support not only from the organisation but also from fans from all over the world. She made the finals again and again shined internationally - at Miss Bikini in Shanghai she placed 6th and won the "Best in Swimsuit" Award.
Unfortunately, life took another direction for Mariana as she was taken to a hospital with an urinary tract infection, which soon became a generalized infection. The doctors believed she didn´t stand much chances to survive. She did survive, however, but because of the strong medicines she had to take both her feet and hands had to be amputated. Still at risk of dying, Mariana is conscious and made it clear that, even under such critical conditions, she wants to live. Newspapers and websites have been asking people to donate blood(type 0 negative), which she desperately needs. The sad case and strong will and braveness of this young woman drew the attention of people not only in Brazil but also from all over the world.

Let´s all pray and hope things will soon turn for the best possible for Mariana. You are an admirable girl, God Bless you.

There are beauty queens we all love and beauty queens we all disapprove. Beauty queens popular or totally unknown, successful or lost. And also beauty queens that became close to our heart for some mysterious reasons. She may not be the most beautiful and you maybe cannot name one reason why she always takes your breath away. But still, that one beauty is a soft-spot in your history of being a pageant fan...

Gabriela Justinová placed as second runner-up in the enormously competitive pageant that was Miss Czech Republic 1997. Later, she represented our country at Miss International in Japan. Nowadays, she is building up her own Central European introduction agency.

Over time, I happened to grow on blogging more than I thought I ever could. At first, I only wanted to give a brief or wider view into pageants but as crownings went on, I often found myself thinking that a blog is more about speaking out oneself´s mind. Yet still in the most objective way that is possible, though.

Here are blogs that I´ve learnt to visit and read often and recommend every pageant fan interested:
