Nigerian pride: AGBANI DAREGO, Miss World 2001

31. srpna 2008 v 7:30 | Martina A. |  Miss World
Ibiagbanidokibubo Asenite Darego was born in 1982, in Abonnema, Rivers State, Nigeria. With her unusually slim and tall figure for a Nigerian woman, she dreamt of becomming a model. Unfortunately, her father didn´t approve it and so she went on to study computer science at a university. She postponed her studies, however, and started modelling and entering pageants instead. In "The Face of Africa" modeling contest, she placed as a runner-up and in January 2001 won the "Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria" title. Her crown enabled her to represent her nation at Miss Universe in Puerto Rico, where she finished among the 10 semifinalists and later also at Miss World in Sun City, South Africa, which she won - as the first black African woman to ever do so. Agbani´s achievment meant therefore even more to her country. Huge celebrations started immediately after her win.
During her reign, Agbani became a patron of a breast-cancer awareness program and dedicated her crown to her mother, who died of a breast cancer when Agbani was a child. She also devoted time to an anti-malaria campaign.
Unfortunately, the end of her reign was remarked by a controversy. The 2002 Miss World pageant was to be held in Nigeria in Agbani´s honour but at that time, another young woman from Nigeria, Amina Lawal, had been sentenced to death by stoning. Women's-rights groups started immediately attacking the pageant for being held in a country where women rights are not kept. This led to unsensitive comments in the newspapers and caused protests of muslims living in Nigeria. The pageant was then for safety reasons moved to London but several contestants withdrew. The new titleholder was Turkey´s Azra Akin.
After she gave up her crown, Agbani Darego signed up a contract with L'Oreal. She continues modelling but plans to become a successful businesswoman.

30. srpna 2008 v 17:01 | Martina A.
Eliška Bučková, Czech Miss and semifinalist to Miss Universe 2008, sang for kids from SOS Dětské Vesničky(Kids´Village), together with her father and brother. She was also introduced as the official face of the organisation. Besides singing, Eliška talked about her experinces as a model and as a beauty queen and about the many places she had visited so far.
SOS Dětská Vesnička in Brno-Medlánky was founded in 2003. Up to this day, ten houses are being occupied by 10 mothers, taking care of a total sum of 48 children. The purpose of such villages is giving a family to children, who don´t and can´t have their own.

Fans all over the globe wait for this moment nearly as anxiously as the contestants themselves. It´s a never-ending story, a never-ending circle of making lists of favourites and predictions of who may crack the semifinals and who may not and why. And we love that part because everyone stands an equal chance. But then, all the talks suddenly quiet down. Silence speads both onstage and behind our screens as the outgoing queen takes her final walk and only two brave contestants are holding their hands waiting for the announcement of the winner. Here I present you several photos of Miss Universe crowning moments. Enjoy !

Winfred Omwakwe, Kenya´s first Grand Slam winner

29. srpna 2008 v 7:50 | Martina A. |  Miss Earth
There are beauty pageants prefering looks, beauty pageants prefering perfect body, beauty pageants laying the biggest stress on stage presence. But Miss Earth is looking for beauty that is simple and real and comes from within. Now that´s a pageant I call unpredictable because a photo never tells you the whole story. But also Miss Earth judges can´t see everything...
In 2002, a gorgeous dark-haired Džejla Glavović, Miss Bosnia&Herzegovina, won the glittering Miss Earth crown in the second year of the pageant. But she was also the second Grand Slam winner stripped of her title that year. After Oxana Fedorova, also Džejla wasn´t particulary what a beauty queen should be and she had to send her crown and sash back to the Philippines. Or actually to Kenya, because that´s where the 1st Runner Up, Winfred Omwakwe, comes from...

If only she was there: RAMONA AMIRI

28. srpna 2008 v 19:56 | Martina A. |  Miss World
Ramona Amiri was born in 1980 in Montreal, Canada to a Persian mother and an Assyrian father. She speaks five languages and has a science degree from the University of British Columbia. Already during her studies, she began a volunteer work as a preparation for her future medical carrier. She is also a passionate belly dancer.
Besides all that, she has become a successful model and her beauty led her as far as the Miss Canada World competition, which she won. Later that year, Ramona represented her country at the 2005 Miss World pageant and finished among the semifinalists. She also tried her luck at the Miss Universe Canada pageant but placed "only" as 1st Runner Up.
After her win at Miss Canada World, Ramona Amiri has been travelling all across the country raising money for various causes. Her motto in life is: Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, dance like no one's watching...
A true "Beauty with a Purpose", isn´t she...

Swiss beauty: Laurianne Gillieron

28. srpna 2008 v 14:15 | Martina A. |  What did not fit any category but is worth reading !
Once, there was a time, when European Misses were taking one international crown after another, leaving many Latin countries far behind. Now, the times have changed and European delegates come to Miss Universe still less and less prepared and less and less willing to win. They often look lost onstage, unable to stop Latin stunners on their way to the crown. Then, they come home and complain about how hard the pageant was, forgetting completely, that the pageant is in no way a month-long holiday on a beach. And so, it´s no suprise that Europe last won the Miss Universe title almost twenty years ago(or six, if you wish to count Oxana Fedorova in 2002)...
Although, exceptions may be found. We all remember Ieva Kokorevica of Latvia, Kateřina Smržová of Czech Republic, Zana Krasniqi of Kosovo, Tarja Smura of Finland or Helen Lindes and Diana Nogueria of Spain. Finland´s Lola Odusoga is already a legend, just like Russia´s Yulia Lemigova and Oxana Fedorova, Miss Grece Evelina Papatoniou, Italy´s Denny Mendez, Silvia Lakatošová of Slovakia and to a certain extend also Miss Universe 1990 Mona Grudt from Norway. All these and many others kept the European flag still high on the sky of the pageant world.
One of them is definitely Laurianne Gillieron, Miss Switzerland and 2nd Runner Up to Miss Universe 2006.
Laurianne was born in 1984 in Lausanne, Switzerland but grew up in Prilly.
She has a Law degree and is also a talented dancer - she even placed second in the Swiss Latin Dance Championships in 2002 and 2003.
In 2005 Laurianne became Miss Switzerland, as the first woman from the French-speaking part of the country in 11 years to do so. Later that year, she represented Switzerland at Miss World in China but to the surprise of many did not even make the first cut. Months later she was sent to Miss Universe held in Los Angeles, USA, already as a huge favourite, and placed 3rd.

INGRID RIVERA: When the pageant world gets a bit cruel

26. srpna 2008 v 21:21 | Martina A. |  What did not fit any category but is worth reading !
The Ruth Ocumarez Award is named after Miss Dominican Republic 2002, who was a clear favourite to win that year´s Miss Universe crown. To everyone´s surprise, she failed to make even the first cut. Since then, this incredible Dominican beauty is remembered every year, after the conclusion of Miss Universe - The Ruth Ocumarez Award is given to a contestant, a favourite, that is as well mysteriously left out in the dark...
This year´s winner is Ingrid Rivera, Miss Puerto Rico 2008. Ingrid was a heavy favourite already at the 2005 Miss World pageant, where she eventually placed 3rd. Therefore, her participation at Miss PR Universe 2008 final came as a sensation to the pageant world. Unfortunately, her win was surrounded by a scandal with pepper spray, which was reportedly put in her make-up and wardrobe to make her withdrew from the pageant. Lateron, already as the new Puerto Rican queen, Ingrid was photographed with Donald Trump, the owner of Miss Universe org., which made even more headlines.
Despite all the rumours, Ingrid became a huge favourite for the 2008 Miss Universe crown. She appeared to be one of the most photographed contestants of the whole pageant, I dare to say she was among the most controversial MU contestants in recent years. Half of the world being confident about her winning, the other half saying, she didn´t stand a chance this time. At the end, it may have been too much pressure for Ingrid to handle and she failed to make the semifinals...
And so, this time, I want to leave all the discussions and rumours aside and celebrate what Ingrid Rivera became famous for at the very beginning - her stunning beauty. Enjoy !

Crown on spotlight: MISS WORLD 2008

22. srpna 2008 v 16:50 | Martina A. |  MISS WORLD 2008 coverage
The venue of the 2008 Miss World pageant has not yet been officially announced, although almost all delegates have already been selected. Therefore, it is time for pre-pageant predictions. The favourites so far seem to be the following:
Alizee Poulicek, Miss Belgium 2008 with Czech roots, whom we already know from Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam. Already back then she was considered as a frontrunner but unfortunately didn´t make the cut. Will she have a better luck at Miss World ?
Another experienced beauty is Tamara Almeida, this year´s Miss Brazil World. Also Tamara is already known to the pageant world - as second runner-up to Miss TQI 2007(represented the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha). After two attempts she finally got the chance to run for the blue crown.
Zuzana Jandová, Miss Czech Republic 2008, will surely do her best to make us proud again. A dark-horse.
Although Marjorie Cevallos did not win Miss Ecuador, her chances at the up-comming international pageant are by many considered as high. Good luck !
Parvathy Omanakuttan, Miss India, definitely is a beauty to watch for. With her speaking-skills and pretty face she may easily make the cut. After all, her country won Miss World for five times.
When the final outcome of last year´s Miss Mexico was announced, the whole country was overwhelmed by joy. They knew they just may have crowned two future Grand Slam winners. Will Anagabriela Espinoza grow to the expectations ?
Ksenia Sukhinova, Miss Russia 2008, could have been a frontrunner at Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam but she never arrived there. Now, she has another chance and her fans really have every right to cheer for her !
Tansey Coetzee is said to be the best Miss South Africa in years. And if the pageant is really held in Sun City, SA, as rumours say, Tansey couldn´t ask for a better support..
Only 18 year-old Patricia Rodriguez is by many seen as the next Miss World. Does Miss Spain really have what it takes ? We will see.
Gabrielle Walcott of Trinidad&Tobago is another Carribean beauty with strong chances to place among the semifinalists !
This year´s Miss Turkey was stuffed by beauties. One of them is Leyla Tugutlu, Miss Turkey 2008.
After seeing photos of Miss Universe Ukraine final night, fans all over the globe fell in love with beautiful Irina Zhuravskaya. Months later, she became Miss Ukraine World and won herself the right fight for some bigger crown...
Venezuela returned with a Miss Universe win in 2008 but will they be able to repeat it again at Miss World ? Ask Hannelys Quintero, this year´s Miss Mundo Venezuela.
